Woodpeckers are the headbangers of the bird world! These crazy birds smash their heads into trees somewhere between 8,000-12,000 times a day. Fortunately, our one is a little more docile and should just sit there fooling your friends without making that tap, tap, tap racket. Woodpeckers are ingenious hunters. Firstly, they create “caches” of food by drumming row upon row of small holes and then they wedge nuts or seeds into each one. When the times right, they unleash their 4-inch-long barbed tongues into the holes to extract their dinner. So where does their tongue go when they're finished? It simply wraps around their skull! Our Wood pecker is a perennial backyard favorite…tongue not included!
